A shopper sees no matching products
A shopper gets your no-match message when no approved, available product fits their answers. Open the quiz in the simulator with the same answers to see which rule removed each product, then loosen the rules, approve waiting changes, or add a fallback collection so the shopper still gets suggestions.
What the shopper sees#
Nothing fits at all: your No-match message (or "We couldn't find a match for your answers. Try changing an answer, or browse our products." if you didn't write one), your link (or "Browse products", which opens all products) and Start over.
One step of a routine is empty: that step shows the message; the other steps show their products. An empty optional step is simply left out.
A fallback collection is set: products from it appear under "You might also like".
Why it happens#
The rules leave nothing. Include rules from different questions must all match, and excludes remove more. By default, a hard exclude (an allergy, for example) also removes products that have no value for that attribute, to be safe.
Products are waiting for review. When a product's data changes, it leaves the results until you review the change on Changes. See how change control works.
Products aren't available. Quizproof only recommends active products that are published to your Online Store and in stock. When results appear, it also checks each product in the shopper's market: one that is sold out or not sold there is replaced by the next-best match, up to two times, and then dropped.
A budget answer. Products priced above the shopper's budget, in their currency, are left out.
What the checks catch before you publish#
A few seconds after each save, Quizproof checks the quiz's answer paths against your approved catalog. The report is under Checks of the saved draft on the Result tab. These findings are about empty results:
| Finding | What it means | Blocks publishing |
|---|---|---|
| Empty slot, no no-match message | A required step, or the list, is empty on some paths and there is no message | Yes |
| Empty slot (no-match message shown) | The same, with a message in place | No |
| Empty optional slot | An optional step is empty on some paths | No |
| Answer alone gives nothing | That answer, with nothing else answered, gives no result | No |
| Left out for missing data | A product is removed only because a value is missing | No |
| Fallback used | The fallback collection fills a step on some paths | No |
The report says how many answer paths it checked, and whether that was all of them or a subset. The checks run against the products in results now; they can't see what sells out later or what isn't sold in a shopper's market, so a quiz with no findings can still show the message.
Fix it#
On the quiz's page, choose Simulate, or Open in simulator next to a finding. Enter the shopper's answers to see the result; Not shown lists the products a leave-out or never-show rule removed, and which rule.
Loosen the rule that removes too much, or add the missing value to the products.
Check Changes for reviews that hold products back.
On the Result tab, under When nothing fits:
write a No-match message;
choose Choose collection to set a Fallback collection. It is used only when a required step comes up short or the list is empty, and its products must still pass every exclude and fit the step;
optionally set Link text (optional) and Link address, for example
/collections/all.
Publish the quiz.
If it doesn't work#
The simulator shows products, but shoppers see the message. The simulator uses your catalog as Quizproof has it. On the store, products that are sold out or not sold in the shopper's market are dropped. Check stock and the product's markets in Shopify.
Fallback products don't appear either. Fallback products follow the same excludes, hard excludes and availability. Add more products to the collection, or check that they fit the step.
