Build a part finder
A part finder lets shoppers pick what they own (a printer, a phone, a boat or a car) and shows only the parts that fit it. Open Finders in the app menu, then Create finder.
What shoppers pick#
Name: only you see it.
What do shoppers pick?: one word, used in shopper copy such as "Fits your printer".
Levels: the choices, in order, for example Brand › Series › Model, or Year › Make › Model. A level is Text or Year (at most one Year level).
Optional levels: the last levels can be optional, so shoppers may skip them (a boat's engine, for example). The first level is always required.
Once a finder has data its levels are fixed: you can rename a level, or add an optional level at the end.
Coverage#
Products I've mapped are complete (the default): if a product has any fit data in this finder, anything not listed for it doesn't fit.
My data is partial: anything not listed means "we don't know".
Switching shows how many products change between "doesn't fit" and "we don't know" before it saves.
Scope collections (optional, up to 5) are the collections whose products should have fit data. They never make a product fit anything; the Coverage tab lists the products in them that have no fit data yet.
Status#
A new finder is a draft. Shoppers see it only after its fit data is activated (see the Changes tab) and you click Activate finder.
Archive stops serving the finder and keeps its data.
Delete removes a draft or archived finder and all its data. It can't be undone. Archive an active finder first.
Add the finder to your store#
Shoppers use the finder through the Part finder block in your theme. An active finder shows the card Add to your store until your published theme has the block:
Add the finder to your header opens the theme editor with the block in your header, so it shows on every page. Add it to your home page adds it in a new section on your home page instead. You can also add the block to any section that takes app blocks, such as a collection page.
In the block's settings, pick your finder under Finder (type its name if the list is empty), then Save.
Back in Quizproof, the card is gone, and Home counts the blocks ("Part finder blocks placed"). Home can't tell which finder each block shows.
The block's other settings:
Heading: leave it empty for the finder's own heading ("Find parts for your printer").
{noun}is filled in with what shoppers pick.Layout: In a row puts the levels side by side on wide screens; Stacked puts them one under the other.
Button label: leave it empty for the finder's own label ("Find parts").
Storefront settings#
Settings › Storefront on the finder sets:
Browse fallback link: where the block's Browse all products link goes. Empty:
/collections/all.Contact link: where Contact the store goes when a shopper says their choice isn't listed. Empty:
/pages/contact.Text: every word shoppers see from the finder (the block, the results page and the Fit check), per published language: pick the language above the fields. An empty field shows the built-in text for that language (see Languages). Placeholders in braces, like
{level}, are filled in for each shopper; some must stay in. Each language can be up to 2,048 bytes, for up to 10 languages. The block's own Heading and Button label win over this text.
Links are a page on your store (starting with /) or an https:// link.
What shoppers see#
Shoppers choose each level in turn, then Find parts takes them to the parts that fit. The next time, the block shows their choice with See parts that fit, Change and Forget. Without JavaScript, the block is a Browse all products link. When a shopper declines your store's cookie preferences, their choice is remembered only in that browser tab.
Your results page#
Find parts opens the finder's results page on your store, inside your theme's header and footer:
/apps/quizproof/f/<finder>?c=<choice>. It shows "Parts that fit your HP › OfficeJet › 9015e", the products that fit
under Fits your printer, then the products marked as fitting everything under Works with every printer.
Only checked products. Every product on the page was checked for the shopper's choice just now. If a product stops fitting while the page is open (your data changed), it leaves the page, and Add to cart checks again before it adds anything.
Prices and stock are live, in the shopper's country and currency. A product that isn't sold in the shopper's country doesn't show ("Some parts aren't sold in your country"). A product with several variants that fit shows a choice of those variants only; one with none in stock shows Sold out.
Sort: Featured (your order, then by title) and Newest. Price sorts appear when a choice has at most 100 products.
Nothing fits yet: the page says so, shows the products that work with everything, and offers Change, your Contact link and the Browse fallback link. When a choice needs one more level (an engine, for example), the page asks for it.
Cart lines added from the page say For: HP › OfficeJet › 9015e, so you can see what each part was bought for, in the cart, at checkout and on the order. A hidden fit receipt (
_qp_fit) goes with it. To hide the visible line, turn off Show the shopper's selection on cart lines in Settings › Storefront. Lines already in the cart are left alone; adds through your theme's own button are labelled only under the Fit check (below).Counting: a results page counts as one finder search for the shopper's choice. Reloading it, opening it in a new tab or coming back later doesn't count again while the search is fresh (24 hours). A shopper who declined cookie preferences sees Show parts that fit in a new tab, and that click counts. In a browser that stores nothing at all, each visit counts.
The page isn't indexed by search engines. If Quizproof can't be reached at all, Shopify shows its own error page; the block only takes shoppers there after a successful search, so this is rare.
Show fit on product pages#
The Fit check block shows, under the buy buttons, whether the product fits the shopper's saved choice: "✓ Fits your HP › OfficeJet › 9015e", "✗ Doesn't fit" with a link to the parts that do, "✓ Works with every printer", or "We don't have fit data for this product" with your Contact link. On the finder's page, choose Add the fit check to your product page, drag the block under the buy buttons, pick the finder in the block's Finder setting (type its name to find it) and save. Each block shows one finder: add a second block for a second finder.
Free for shoppers who already chose: the verdict for a saved choice is never counted, and it keeps showing when you reach your plan's limit.
Shoppers who haven't chosen see Check fit with your printer and choose right there; that check counts as one finder search, like a results page. At the limit the block says "Fit check isn't available right now" with a link to the results page.
Variants: the line follows the option the shopper selects. If this option doesn't fit but another does, it says which ("2-pack fits · Select it"); the block never changes the option by itself.
One more level: when a part depends on a level the shopper skipped (an engine, for example), the block asks for it there.
Products without fit data in the finder, and outside its scope collections, show nothing.
Cart lines: on Dawn 15, Horizon 4 and Spotlight 16 (and copies of them), a product added with your theme's Add to cart or Buy it now while the line says it fits carries For: HP › OfficeJet › 9015e and the hidden fit receipt, like adds from the results page. The receipt is at most 10 minutes old; when it can't be renewed, the line is added without them. On other themes, lines added with your theme's button aren't labelled: the block shows the verdict only. Show the shopper's selection on cart lines (Settings › Storefront) applies here too.
Without JavaScript the block is a link to the results page.
Privacy#
Remembered choices stay in the shopper's browser, and only with preferences consent (see What shoppers see).
Searches keep no selection and nothing that identifies the shopper: how a search counted on your plan, for 90 days.
Analytics: the finder sends its events (levels chosen, the selection, results viewed, cards opened, fit shown, adds) only while the shopper allows analytics in your cookie banner. They hold ids and counts, never free text or shopper identifiers, and are kept 90 days. A shopper who withdraws consent ends that: the browser tells Quizproof once, and that visit's events are deleted. Daily totals are kept as long as your store's data.
Model not listed keeps only the text the shopper chose to send you, for 180 days.
Orders: the hidden fit receipt on an order line names the finder, the choice and the fit, never the shopper. More in Privacy and consent.
Languages#
Shoppers see the finder in your storefront's language. Quizproof has built-in text in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Polish, Swedish, Danish and Japanese for the block, the results page and the Fit check. Portuguese is one Brazilian Portuguese text, used for Portuguese (Brazil) and Portuguese (Portugal). The built-in translations were drafted by an AI model and reviewed by a second AI model. Read them in your languages and change anything that doesn't sound right for your store. A shopper sees the text for their storefront language, else your store's primary language, else English. Your own text (Settings › Storefront › Text, per language) comes first. Your finder's data (brands, models, level names) is shown as you wrote it: Quizproof doesn't translate it.
Orders with fitted parts#
Every add from the results page, a quiz, or (on Dawn, Horizon and Spotlight) the Fit check puts a hidden fit receipt on the cart line. When the order comes in, Quizproof reads it and checks each receipt: it must be signed for your store and name the line's own variant.
Lines whose receipt checks out count as fitted lines, with the line's price after discounts. Refunds don't change it, as for quiz orders; an order edit that removes or reduces the line does.
A line whose receipt doesn't check out (copied or edited by hand, or for another variant) is only counted: "N lines had an unverified fit label".
Lines from quiz test links count as tests and are left out.
This works with or without a quiz: an order can count for a quiz and have fitted lines at the same time.
The part finder's numbers#
Each finder's Analytics tab shows how shoppers use it over the dates you pick (your store's days; the numbers update every hour). Home shows "Part finder: N journeys this week · M selections with nothing that fits".
Journeys count every shopper who used the finder, like your plan does. Everything else counts only shoppers who allowed analytics: "Counts only shoppers who allowed analytics".
Selections answered and With fitting parts: how often a selection had a product made for it.
Top selections: what shoppers pick most, with how often something fit.
Selections with nothing that fits: add products or fit data for these (each opens in Check). Only universal parts: shoppers saw only parts that fit everything.
Not covered at all: configurations in your data with no fitting product (as under Coverage), by how often shoppers picked them.
Model not listed: what shoppers typed when their model wasn't listed, under the level they were at. Dismiss an entry once you've handled it.
From selection to order: shoppers who made a selection, then added a part, then ordered a part they added within 30 days. Adds from the results page, a product page or a quiz all count. Beside it, how many shoppers chose a level, viewed results, opened a result card or saw a fit verdict on a product page: counts, not steps.
Orders and revenue count only fitted lines of shoppers who allowed analytics.
